Great tool for reliefing, but doesn't last long

I do love this reliefing block; I've used it a lot. But the grit is so fine, I suppose it's bound to be a short-lived sanding surface. If you're sanding bare metal, It will turn out great results on many pieces, but I like to paint my metal pieces and then relief them, and I think the added layers just wears off the abrasive quality of this block. I'm considering using the base of this block and trying to attach new sanding paper, because the size and "give" of the base is really nice.
