Hi! No, you do not need a base tray for this matchbox die. Tim Holtz has Movers & Shapers base dies, like this one, which have an empty space (a small square hole) inside the die. This space is made so you can use a mini magnetic die inside to create a die-cut shape within that shape. The mini magnetic dies are slightly shallower in depth so that when they are placed inside the space, they are level with the base die. You can use the base without a mini die inside too, it comes with a small magnetic square to place inside, so your paper doesn't get stuck in the hole. The Movers and Shapers Base tray is for using the mini magnetic shape dies by themselves. This tray acts like a shim for the dies so they will cut out with your machine.
