How do you get the stones off of the backing, and onto your project, without just making a mess?

Sadly I made a dreadful mess with the large swirl (top left corner) and had to throw it away. Fortunately I had bought 2 sheets of the gems and had better luck the 2nd time. I was trying to place them on a pillar candle, so I might have had better luck had I been applying the gems to paper. But I'm sorry to say that I don't have any tips to pass along.
