I bought this the day I got the scrapbook.com e-mail blast about it earlier this month. But today I held a small funeral and boxed it up to send to Imaginisce for repair / replacement.
Last night while cutting a grosgrain ribbon (and not a cheap spool, I might add) the cutting wire melted to the ribbon. They were completely fused together. My husband and I tried to tear it off with tweezers as best we could, but the wire came out of its base. We were finally able to remove the ribbon with the wire out, and then do minor surgery to put the wire back in but it was slightly bent after that and didn't work as well.
Then today while cutting double-faced satin ribbon from Sam Flax, it did the same thing - only there was no saving it this time - the wire completely melted to the ribbon and they could not be separated. I taped the wire and the ribbon to a card and boxed it up with the i-Magicut to send it in to them tomorrow (as the instructions directed). I loved it enough - when it worked - to hope this one was a fluke and buy a replacement already, but I'm holding my breath.
UPDATE: In less than a week, I-Magicut sent a replacement for my broken one. Awesome customer service and for that alone I'm bumping my review to 5-stars.
I just received this tool and have only cut a few ribbons with it; I'm sure I will discover more features and love the tool even more :0) For some reason, out of all of the scissors that I own, none seemed to be able to cut my ribbons, after tying the bow SHARPLY. Maybe it was because I couldn't get enough tension on the ribbon? Regardless, now, I don't have to worry about that, thanks to the Ribbon Cutter. I tie my bow, attach it to my card, and then cut my ribbon with the Ribbon Cutter - so easy! I have learned to cut on the diagonal because to the marking on the Cutter. But, I haven't learned to cut a chevron cut because most of my ribbon that I have used is 1/4" wide or less; these fingers aren't so nibble as to fold those small widths in half :0) The Ribbon Cutter is small and heats up quickly. My investment was well worth it!
This ribbon cutter is fabulous! I thought it would be bigger - I was pleasantly surprised that it was compact, light weight, and EASY to use. I was excited how fast it worked. Once cut, the edges of the ribbon are smooth and clean. When cutting larger ribbon, the more tension you use, the cleaner the cut. The ribbon cutter doesn't make any noise, so that means I can bring it to any and all crops. The cutter cooled down very quickly. The only improvement I could think of would be to coat the bottom with a rubber coating so it can't slide on a table.
That's what I bought it for: I'm tired of trying to cut and fray-check organza ribbon. This thing does it perfectly in one go.
With heavier ribbon (like the cotton stuff that also frays) you have to hold it long enough to let that little wire burn its way through the ribbon. Pushing harder doesn't make it move faster; just hold it gently but firmly and give it time to burn through.
I've also used it on the butcher's twine which tends to get ragged on the ends and it works great.
We'll see how well it holds up over time but so far, it's a winner for me!
Our family of scrapbookers were really excited when we saw the demonstration for this before it was even available! Cutting ribbon cleanly and evenly, without having it ravel is so wonderful. Especially with a couple of perfectionists that have trouble with things not just so. Now they can always be just so!!! Hooray for us. Have used it constantly since we recieved this wonderful product.
