Question, not a review - need advice from someone who has used this

The description says free-standing. How does it stand? I was thinking of taking the clip off and putting it on a large acrylic piece so it would hold a larger picture, say an 8x8. Is this sturdy enough for my 3-year-old grandson to look through on his own? Anyone have any answers?
