Questions & Answers
  • This is not a sandpiper. It looks like a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron to me. It's a beautiful illustration, and it's on my favorites list.   By: Bluepotoo (08-Mar-15) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • I believe the bird actually is an American Bittern and the sticks in the background add to that belief. The American Bittern's habitat includes marshes, tules, and reedy lakes (all mostly fresh or bracken water). The design of the stamp supports that habitat. If it actually is the Night Heron (either a yellow-crowned or a black-crowned), it has the markings of an immature bird. Remember, though, Deep Red Stamps is an Australian company, and their bird species may be different from those in the United States. • The shape of both bill and tail are those of the yellow crowned night heron. There is no plume, but it could be a young heron. However, the markings (which the heron has at a very young age) are of a sandpiper. The background foliage looks more seaside than swamp. So, it is a shorebird of artistic interpretation. And yes, it is beautiful. By: K E M (09-Mar-15) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!
