I believe the bird actually is an American Bittern and the sticks in the background add to that belief. The American Bittern's habitat includes marshes, tules, and reedy lakes (all mostly fresh or bracken water). The design of the stamp supports that habitat. If it actually is the Night Heron (either a yellow-crowned or a black-crowned), it has the markings of an immature bird. Remember, though, Deep Red Stamps is an Australian company, and their bird species may be different from those in the United States.
