These inserts feature a "false" back to your slot so that your smaller ink pads stay to the front of your case. No more having to try and reach and grab your ink pad that has slid to the back of the case, now it stays snuggly in the front of your case making it simple to insert and remove. I recently purchased the PortaInk Dual Swivel Traveler for my distress inks but mistakenly only ordered one set of inserts. The directions for putting the PortaInk together said it was much better to put the inserts in before assembling the unit but...I went ahead and put it together anyway.
Once the second set of inserts arrived I put them in with relative ease and now my PortaInk unit looks fabulous!
I love that I can see my distress inks instead of them being tucked away in a drawer. I love that this unit swivels and that the addition of the inserts means I don't have to fish my ink pads out from the depths, they're within easy reach.
This item is needed to actually use the rotating ink pad holder. There is no mention of it in the description of the 48 back to back revolving holder. I found out about it later when the ink pads fall through to the middle. You cannot use the double without these inserts. If you buy the wall hung single, they can't fall through, and the inserts aren't needed. So they should be included in the double revolving free standing unit, even if they added the price in. Here is another snafu, these inserts are sold in sets of 24. The double would require 2 boxes of them to use the free standing item. I emailed them about this and have yet to hear from their customer service.
I purchased the revolving ink stand several years ago but only ordered 24 of the inserts thinking I didn't really need them....ha! get these puppies. They will save your manicure and allow you to see the ink pad instead of craning your neck to peer into the ink slot if you're storing Distress, which is how I use the PortaInk. If you have regular sized ink pads, you won't need the inserts but they're a must have if you want to store your Distress pads.
Yes, they were a bit difficult but I have never been much of a quitter.
You just have to lift in one side of the insert into place first then the other side goes in. I held the insert in place with one hand and used a small flat head screwdriver on the other side to lift the prong up and into the slot.
Once I got the hang of it, they went in easily.
Now all of my Distress pads stay where I put them. I have already ordered 2 more of the Portainks organizer and the inserts too!
I ordered these Ink Pad Inserts to hopefully fit in the PortaInk Pad holders (which I also ordered. The two holders and the inserts came - no problem. However; there was not a scrap of paper with instructions as to how to put the inserts into the holders. I sent an email asking for help or instructions and so far I've heard nothing.
These work great for the PortaInk Organizer for all of my Tim Holtz ink pads.
I found them difficult to install... I had to "jam" them hard sometimes so they would click into place. I didn't find it to be a big deal because it didn't take long.
Work great for the Tim Holtz distress inks. Install the inserts before putting the towers together. They just snap into place at the back of the tower and it is easy to do this if done first. That way you can see what you are doing and get them "clicked" into place correctly.
Use these with the storage tower to help the Distress Inks keep from sliding to the back (difficult to pull out). Some are hard to pop in place (and terrible to take out). Overall a must have purchase.
If you get the PortInk you really need this for the smaller ink pad like Tim's. They make it so much easier to get the inks out.
These do keep the Distress ink pads from falling all the way to the back of the slot. However, I've had my dual swivel tower for many years and these do not click into place in my vintage model. They still work just fine loose, but be aware the functionality is the same as as a stack of cardboard taped together (my previous solution) just less visible.

It looks like the Tim Holtz pads have a gap in the side. Will the reinker fit next to it so I can use the top for other stuff?

These simply fit in the stamp pad holder to help the smaller ink pads from falling to the back. They would not work to hold inks themselves.

why do I need these?
The stamp pad holder normally fits a large size stamp pad. These inserts will allow the smaller (distress pad size) ink pads to fit into the stamp pad holder instead of slipping to the rear of the slot. It keeps them readily visible. You won't have to dig into the slot to pull out the stamp pad.

Also the hero arts ink pads only fit in the holder With the short side showing out and you would not need the insert. But I do not store my hero art pads in these because I do not like the way it looks. I store my tim holtz distress ink pads and my memento and also staz on pads in these and I use the inserts for all these pads because I like them stored long ways better and I don't want to dig them out of the holder. Hope that helps.

No, these are just small plastic inserts that shorten the depth of the slot in order to accommodate smaller ink pads such as the Tim Holtz distress ink pads. They snap into the individual slots of the Portaink pad holder. It would be similar to adding a spacer or small piece of piece of scrap wood into the back of each slot. The Portaink unit itself can be hung on the wall or as a stand alone unit on a desk top or shelf.

I can't figure out how to put these in at all :( Are there any videos or picture directions?? I don't even know which is the front of the insert. Thanks in advance!

They are pretty eady to figure out. Yhe solid black plastic is the side that "looks" at you when put it into the slot.
Hi, I don't think there is a front and back to each insert. They just slip into the slots and then provide a little "barrier break" so your smaller ink pads don't disappear towards the back of the slot.
